Young Juniper Shimpaku transformed into mini bonsai in first styling
Young Juniper shimpaku bonsai is transformed into an upright miniature bonsai tree in its first styling and shaping. Applying wire and bending and twisting, I was able to transformation a horizontal branch into a twisted vertical branch. Beautiful shohin mini bonsai in the future.

Bonsai transformation of this shimpaku juniper began at the Bonsai Society of Victoria where I did a demonstration on shimpaku junipers. This tree underwent heavy bending using thick wire and guy wires to pull the trunk down to make a smaller tree.     Nice work David getting those bends in during winter I find the wood isn’t as pliable as it is during summer. I’m assuming this is one of your air layers, I have done a few and have potted them up in March this year, how long did you let it just sit in the pot before you started to style it?

      @@dirtmonkeyz I mostly do my bends from late summer to end of winter. I avoid spring as I find the cambium tends to pull away from the hardwood and damages the tree. I give my air layers 6 months to a year before working on them. The longer the better.

    I take it, its not normal for a jmaple to start its 2nd push of the yr in 97 degree heat? Since u said they dont push again until it gets much cooler. Does this mean that my tree might have a 3rd flush? Wow! Will be beautifull ! Thanks from Kentucky USA
